Cobourg Marks Emergency Preparedness Week 2026

Cobourg, ON (May 5, 2026)The Town of Cobourg encourages residents to learn more about how to prepare themselves and their families during Emergency Preparedness Week (May 3–9, 2026).

Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is a national awareness initiative and an opportunity for residents to take action to protect themselves, their families, and their community during an emergency. This year's theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. Community members are encouraged to take the following steps:

  • Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to your community and region can help you better prepare.
  • Make a plan – A plan will help you and your family know what to do in an emergency.
  • Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, you may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Meet Our Emergency Planner
The Town of Cobourg Emergency Planner will be at the Cobourg Farmers' Market (Rotary Harbourfront Park, 35 Albert Street) this Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Visit the booth to take home a fillable Emergency Plan for your home, learn about Alertable, ask questions, and enter a contest to win a First Aid Kit.

Stay Informed During an Emergency
During an emergency, the Town of Cobourg will update the public through the following channels:

  • Public Notices – cobourg.ca/news
  • Facebook – @TownofCobourg
  • Alertable – the Town of Cobourg's emergency notification system

Alertable is a multi-purpose communication service used to send alerts to residents, businesses, and visitors during critical events, as well as for relevant day-to-day communications such as major service disruptions.

Personalize Your Alertable Notifications
The Town of Cobourg and Lakefront Utilities use Alertable to send notifications directly to residents via their preferred method of communication. The free Alertable app can be downloaded on a mobile phone, tablet, or smart speaker (such as Amazon Alexa or Google Nest). Residents may also choose to receive notifications by email or text message.

Alertable allows users to register for emergency notifications based on their device's geographic location or a designated home address, ensuring you stay informed while travelling and remain aware of what is happening at home when you are away.

Users can customize the types of alerts they receive — such as health alerts (e.g., air quality advisories), natural disaster alerts (e.g., earthquakes), or weather alerts (e.g., high winds, heavy snow, or extreme cold) — and select the alert level they wish to receive, including advisory and critical notifications.
