The Town of Cobourg preserves, promotes and makes public the Town's corporate history. Have you ever wanted to research your family's past, or wondered about the history of your home? Are you interested in the history of the Town and its services and attractions? We have many documents in Town’s collection that can help you answer these questions.
The Town of Cobourg Corporate Records and Archives program is responsible for managing, preserving, and disposing of the municipality’s official records in accordance with Sections 254 and 255 of the Municipal Act. This includes records of Council meetings and decisions, committees of Council, as well as local boards and agencies. The program operates under the authority of the Town Clerk and is overseen by the Clerk Department Staff.
Types of Records
The Town of Cobourg has two (2) main types of records in its collection: civic government records and community, local historical records.
Civic government records include records of the Town of Cobourg.
Some items include:
- Original by-laws
- Original minutes from Council and Council Committees
- Assessment rolls
- Historical maps
- Historical photographs of major civic events
- Historical plans of major structures
- Other municipal permanent records across divisions
- Town contracts, agreements, reports, studies;

Appointments are required for research. Staff are available to support your research during your appointment. There is no fee to hold an appointment, however fees for copies, scans and extended research services apply.
Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Personal information collection follows the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA Act) and the Canadian Copyright Act.
