Town of Cobourg Seeking Members for Joint Compliance Audit Committee

Cobourg, ON (May 11, 2026) – The lower tier municipalities of Northumberland County are seeking seven experienced professionals for appointment to the 2026 to 2030 for the Joint Compliance Audit Committee (Committee).

The Committee is an independent body required by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, which considers applications for audits of candidates’ and registered third party advertisers’ campaign finances. Committees may be required to appoint auditors and determine if legal proceedings are required against candidates, campaign contributors, or registered third party advertisers for contraventions of municipal election campaign finance laws.

Applicants with a background in accounting, auditing, law, academics, election administration, and/or public administration are preferred. Applicants should have:

  • Excellent analytical decision-making and communication skills;
  • A working knowledge of the election process and election campaign finance (an asset);
  • Experience working on a government board or quasi-judicial body (an asset);
  • Flexibility to attend meetings during daytime and evening hours; and
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

The following are not eligible to be a member of the Committee:  

  • Employees or officers of any of the participating municipalities;
  • Members of Council or Local Boards for the participating municipalities;
  • Any persons who are candidates in the 2026 municipal election; and
  • Any persons who are registered third parties in the 2026 municipal election.   

The Committee’s term of office is four years, beginning in November 2026. Successful applicants will receive the following remuneration:

  • A retainer of $400 and $350 (including mileage) for attendance at a mandatory training session will be provided.
  • Committee members will receive a per diem of $400 plus mileage for any official committee meetings they are required to attend. Applicants must have flexibility to attend meetings (daytime and evening).
