King Street West Reconstruction Begins June 1

Cobourg, ON (May 27, 2026) – The Town of Cobourg Public Works and Engineering Division would like to inform residents of upcoming construction taking place on King Street West from the Cobourg Creek bridge to William/Ontario Street beginning the week of June 1, 2026.

The work is expected to take approximately six months to complete (weather dependent).

Throughout construction, the road will be temporarily closed to through vehicular traffic. Local access to properties will be maintained for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, except for short-duration interruptions.

The contractor and project engineers will communicate any temporary access restrictions in advance, where possible. Signage will be installed to provide information regarding traffic access and detour routes.

Gas Main Work
Since late March, NPL Canada (approved contractor working on behalf of Enbridge Gas) have been working to relocate a portion of the existing underground natural gas distribution main along King Street West, from the Cobourg Creek easterly to William/Ontario Street.

Though the Town of Cobourg Asset Management Plan, staff identified the King Street West reconstruction project as a high priority for capital investment. Work to be completed includes watermain, sanitary and storm sewer replacement and road resurfacing. The work has been separated into two sections of King Street West:

  • Phase 1: Cobourg Creek bridge east to William/Ontario Street (460 m) – taking place now (spring 2026)
  • Phase 2: Cobourg Creek bridge west to Burnham Street – commencing in 2027
