Cobourg Celebrates National AccessAbility Week 2026


Events planned to share insights and information on inclusive communities

Cobourg, ON (May 25, 2026)The Town of Cobourg and the Cobourg Accessibility Advisory Committee, invite the community to celebrate National AccessAbility Week (NAAW).

NAAW takes place from May 31 to June 6, 2026, and this year’s theme is "Building a Strong, Accessible Canada". Throughout the week, the Town of Cobourg will be sharing insights and information to engage with the community on accessibility. Additionally, the Town of Cobourg is pleased to share events taking place throughout NAAW and encourages community members to participate.

The Town of Cobourg is committed to meeting the needs of people with disabilities in a timely and proactive manner and will use reasonable efforts to provide equitable access to municipal programs, goods, services and facilities in a way that respects a person's dignity and independence.

Accessibility Awards Program
The Town of Cobourg is proud to announce an upcoming Accessibility Awards Program designed to celebrate businesses, community members, organizations, and youth who are championing initiatives that create a more accessible and inclusive community for residents of all abilities. By highlighting local leadership in removing barriers and improving quality of life for residents with disabilities, the program reinforces the Town of Cobourg’s commitment to equitable service delivery, while also supporting ongoing awareness and accountability. NAAW Community Events
The community is welcome to get involved in the following events:

MS Walk Flag Raising
May 29 | 11 a.m. | Victoria Hall (55 King Street West, Cobourg)
In recognition of the 2026 MS Walk, a flag raising ceremony will be held at Victoria Hall on Friday, May 29. MS Canada’s mission is to empower the MS community and support individuals affected by multiple sclerosis by enhancing participation in daily life through programs and services. Community members are encouraged to show their support by attending the flag raising ceremony. 

Community Living Ice Cream Social
May 29 | 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. | Community Living & Respite (275 Cottesmore Avenue, Cobourg)
On Friday, May 29, Community Living & Respite Northumberland is hosting an ice cream social to celebrate the end of Community Living Month. Join them for this outdoor event, featuring activities and a make-your-own sundae bar donated by Kawartha Dairy (dairy free options will be available). This is a free event, all interested community members are invited to attend.

2026 Peterborough-Northumberland MS Walk
May 31 | 10 a.m. | Port Hope Memorial Park (44 Queen Street, Port Hope)
Join the 2026 Peterborough-Northumberland MS Walk to support and raise funds for MS Canada. Funds raised through the event support the nearly 90,000 Canadians living with MS, helping ensure they have access to the care and resources they need in their communities. Event check-in and registration start at 10 a.m., opening ceremonies start at 11 a.m. and the walk begins shortly after. Boccia Try-It Session
June 1 | 3:45 p.m. – 5 p.m. | Cobourg Community Centre (750 D'Arcy Street, Cobourg)
Boccia has been a Paralympic sport since 1984 and continues to grow in popularity around the world. The game tests both muscle control and accuracy as players throw, kick, or use a ramp to propel leather balls towards a white target ball called the “jack”. Boccia requires focus on precision and strategy more than physical strength, leveling the playing field for participants of all physical abilities. This NAAW, join the Quinte Leatherbacks Boccia Club for a Boccia Try-It session in the CCC gym. Players of all abilities and experience levels are welcome.

Red Shirt Day
June 3
Red Shirt Day of Action for Accessibility and Inclusion takes place on Wednesday of NAAW and aims to promote inclusion, accessibility, celebrate achievements, and advocate for the removal of barriers faced by people with disabilities. Community members are encouraged to wear a Red Shirt on Wednesday, June 3, to show their support for disabled people and their families.

Deafblind Ontario Services “Yarn Bombing”
June 4 - 5 | Cobourg Public Library (200 Ontario Street, Cobourg)
The Cobourg Public Library is partnering with Deafblind Ontario Services to celebrate National Deafblind Awareness Month with a splash of colour! On June 4, the space will be "yarn bombed" with vibrant knitted displays to raise awareness for the deafblind community. Make sure to stop by on Friday, June 5, to see the display in all its textile glory.

Accessible Parking in Cobourg
Accessible parking in Cobourg is free for Cobourg residents who have registered for an annual Cobourg Resident Accessible Permit, both in accessible and other lawful parking spaces. Visitors (non-residents) are required to pay applicable parking rates. Accessible on-street parking spaces have a three-hour time limit. Learn more and purchase parking permits on our

2026 Municipal Election Accessibility Plan
The Town of Cobourg has developed a 2026 Municipal Elections Accessibility Plan
to ensure that electoral services are accessible to everyone – candidates, electors and staff. The Plan identifies ways the Town will eliminate barriers for persons of all abilities and create a positive electoral experience for everyone!
