Understanding Municipal Tax Rates
Municipal tax rates are set based on three levies. The municipal tax rate, as set by the Town of Cobourg. The County tax rate, as set by the County of Northumberland and the educational tax rate, set by the province of Ontario. The Town of Cobourg approved the 2025 municipal budget in December 2024. The 2025 budget includes a 5.23% net increase after allowing for new assessment growth of 2.32% and an infrastructure levy of 1.00%.
Property taxes are broken down into two installments for a total of four payments per year. The February and April tax bills are based on 50% of your previous years tax bill with no increase reflected. Following the receipt of the education and County budgets, the Finance Department does a re-calculation of adjustments over the 2025 levy which are communicated with property owners on the second installment issued in May. Tax bills for the second installment are due in June and September 2025.
