Staff continue to clear neighbourhoods of downed trees and branches due to storm

Cobourg, ON (December 29, 2022, 3:00pm) – The Town of Cobourg would like to advise residents that, the Significant Weather Event has been lifted for the Cobourg area.

Municipalities can declare a “Significant Weather Event” under the Municipal Act, 2001, Regulation number 239/02, relating to the maintenance of municipal roads, sidewalks and bike lanes. When a Significant Weather Event is declared, all roadways in the municipality are deemed to be in a state of repair with respect to snow accumulation. The Town of Cobourg officially declared a Significant Weather Event at 6:00pm on Friday, December 23, 2022 due to the damaging winds and precipitation Cobourg experienced Friday and Saturday. In accordance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards, Ontario Reg. 239/02 the Town of Cobourg lifted the Significant Weather Event as of 11:00AM on Thursday, December 29, 2022. Standard timelines for road and sidewalk winter maintenance will now resume as usual.

Downed and Damaged Trees:
Town of Cobourg Roads staff have been working alongside Parks staff to clear neighbourhoods and parks of downed trees and branches as well as snow and ice buildup. If you have a downed or damaged tree on your boulevard or municipal property, you can create a Service Request for Town staff by submitting your information on the Report a Problem page of the Municipal website https://forms.cobourg.ca/Report-a-Problem

Please note, if the tree is on private property, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to clear the tree and brush. Most trees in the backyard are on private property. If you are not certain if your tree is on Town of private property, include a photo and description of your tree on the website and staff will follow up with more information.

The International Society of Arboriculture offers a list of certified Arborists in the area on www.treesaregood.org

Keep Roads Clear for Plows
By-law number 030-2022 states that no vehicle or person shall park a motor vehicle that obstructs the removal of snow from the streets, which is applicable to all streets and times. During heavy snow and extreme weather events, residents are reminded to keep their vehicles off the road to ensure that snowplows and salt trucks can access all areas as safely and efficiently as possible. If a vehicle is found with a windrow of snow around it and no tire tracks leading to/from the parking space, officers may ticket and/or tow.
