Cobourg, ON (May 5, 2025) – The Town of Cobourg is encouraging residents to learn more about how to prepare themselves and their family in honour of Emergency Preparedness Week.

Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is a national awareness initiative coordinated by Public Safety Canada, in close collaboration with the provinces and territories and partners. This year, the theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. EP Week encourages Canadians to take steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies including:

  • Know the risks - Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help you better prepare.
  • Make a plan - It will help you and your family know what to do.
  • Get an emergency kit - During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. Residents may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.

Community Education Initiatives:
The Town of Cobourg Emergency Planner is taking this opportunity to provide education to residents so they can better prepare themselves and their family for an emergency. Residents can attend Victoria Hall on Tuesday, May 6th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. to speak with the Emergency Planner about what they need to know to be better prepared.

Stay Informed During an Emergency:
During an emergency, the Town of Cobourg will update the public via the following communications mediums.

  • Public Notices – Cobourg.ca/news
  • Facebook: @TownofCobourg
  • X: @TownofCobourg
  • Alertable – Emergency notification system

Alertable is a multi-purpose communication service used to send alerts to residents, businesses, and visitors during critical events as well as for relevant day-to-day communications, such as major service disruptions. With the Alertable notification system, the Town of Cobourg will be able to increase its ability in reach residents directly based on their preferred means of communication. The program has a free App that can be downloaded onto a mobile phone, tablet, or smart speaker (e.g. Amazon Alexa, Google Nest) or residents can also sign up to receive notifications via email or text message.

How to Register For Alertable:

  • Download the free Alertable app for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets by visiting Google Play or the App Store.
  • Sign up for free email and SMS notifications or phone calls.
  • For additional applications such as Amazon Alexa or Hey Google, visit Cobourg.ca/fire
