Welcome to the Town of Cobourg's Civic Awards

The Town of Cobourg Civic Awards recognizes local residents who have helped benefit the community through outstanding volunteerism and community involvement. 

The 22nd Annual Civic Awards event took place on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

A) Major Awards (for volunteers with service over five years)
There are 11 categories to choose from, including:

  • Angus and Bernice Read Award: Presented to an individual whose volunteerism, leadership, commitment and actions have improved the quality of life for many Cobourg residents. This individual will have a minimum of five years volunteer service.
  • Arts and Culture Award: Presented to an individual or group who has made an outstanding impact in the arts and cultural community.
  • Bravery Award: Presented to an individual who has displayed courage and heroism in the face of danger in order to save others from harm.
  • Environmental Award: Presented to an individual or group who has made a significant contribution to conserve, protect, enhance and promote a healthy environment.
  • Heritage Award: Presented to an individual or group who has made exceptional contributions to the conservation and promotion of the Town’s cultural heritage resources. 
  • Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Award (IDEA): Presented to an individual or group who has made a positive impact in the community through their demonstrated efforts to inclusion, diversity, equity and/or accessibility. 
  • Layton Dodge Athletic Award: Presented to an athlete, who has contributed to Cobourg’s athletic community in terms of skill, sportsmanship, participation and leadership.
  • Leadership in Sport Award: Presented to a coach, official or sports organizer who has shown outstanding leadership in contribution to Cobourg’s sports and recreational community.
  • Lloyd C. Stinson Memorial Award for Community Service: Presented to a volunteer for their exemplary humanitarian efforts in supporting Cobourg’s vulnerable population.
  • Outstanding Senior Award: Presented to an individual who has displayed an outstanding volunteer contribution to the community and who is sixty-five (65) years of age or older as of December 31st of the year of nomination.
  • Outstanding Youth Award: Presented to an individual who has displayed an outstanding volunteer contribution to the community and their school and who is twenty-one (21) years of age or younger as of December 31st of the year of nomination.

To be eligible for these awards, the nomination form must be returned with information (300 words or less) detailing the nominee’s volunteer achievements and contributions AND 3-5 letters of recommendations.

Optional: Supporting documentation (eg. letters of thanks, newspaper clippings or other pertinent materials) are not required but may enhance the application. Please limit to 10 pages or less and indicate if you wish to have the items returned.

Major Award recipients will receive an aluminum statue created by Hoselton Studios, a Victoria Hall Pin and Certificate of Honour.  Distinguished Award recipients will receive a Victoria Hall Pin and a Certificate of Honour.


B) Distinguished Civic Awards

The Distinguished Awards differ from the Major Awards as they recognize specific contributions made during the past year (2024/2025) and, may be awarded to individuals and groups in the following categories:

  1. Arts and Culture
  2. Athletics
  3. Community Service
  4. Education & Technology
  5. Environment
  6. Heritage
  7. Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Award (IDEA)

To be eligible for these awards, the nomination form must be returned with a letter of recommendation (150 words or less) detailing the nominee’s volunteer achievements and contributions. Nominations for a Distinguished Award does not exclude the recipient from one of the individual Major Awards.

Optional: Supporting documentation (eg. letters of thanks, newspaper clippings or other pertinent materials) are not required but may enhance the application. Please limit to 10 pages or less and indicate if you wish to have the items returned.

Recipients will receive a pin and certificate.

Who Can You Nominate?

  • Those who have volunteered their time and talents, or have displayed exceptional dedication to the enrichment of the community.
  • Recipients must reside or operate a business within Cobourg. However, the selection committee may choose to honour non-Cobourg residents who have demonstrated a strong commitment to volunteerism in our Town.

Who is Not Eligible?

  • Paid professionals
  • Service Clubs. However, individual service club members are eligible.
  • Employees of the Town of Cobourg are not eligible for nominations recognizing contributions made while performing their duties. 
  • Please note, you cannot nominate a family member.

How Can I Nominate Someone?

  1. Online: Simple and convenient, simply go to the Online Nomination Form and submit all required documentation.
  2. Email: Compete the nomination form and email it to Toni Galea at tgalea@cobourg.ca 
  3. Telephone: Call Toni Galea at 905-372-4301 x 4102 to submit a verbal nomination.
  4. Hardcopy: Complete the nomination form and submit all required documentation through the letter slot at the west side of Victoria Hall. 

The Civic Awards Committee reviews the applications and recommends winners to Council. Decisions are made in a Closed Session meeting to keep the results confidential before the awards are presented.
