Town of Cobourg Declares Significant Weather Event and Snow Event

                                             No parking on any roads; avoid non-essential travel

Cobourg, ON (January 25, 2026 at 11:30 a.m.) – Due to the worsening weather forecast with significant amounts of snowfall the Town of Cobourg is declaring a Significant Weather Event and a Snow Event.

Under the Municipal Act, 2001, Regulation 239/02 (Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways), a municipality may declare a Significant Weather Event when severe weather conditions make it unreasonable to meet normal winter maintenance response times.

When a Significant Weather Event is declared, prescribed service timelines are temporarily suspended; however, winter operations continue, with crews focusing on safety, keeping roads passable, and prioritizing arterial roads and emergency routes. Once weather conditions improve and the event is formally ended, normal service standards and response timelines resume.

The Town of Cobourg Public Works Division plowing route priority begins with emergency routes and high-traffic roads, then moves to collector streets and bus routes, and finally residential streets once conditions allow.

To ensure the safety of the public and staff, the Town of Cobourg would like to advise residents to stay off the road and sidewalks unless necessary. Plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Further notice will be provided by the Town once the Significant Weather Event has been lifted.

Keep Roads Clear for Plows
The Town of Cobourg has also declared a Snow Event (in effect immediately for 24 hours) under Section 16 of the Parking Bylaw. A Snow Event states there is no parking on any roads within a municipality, and vehicles parked on the roadway may be ticketed or towed. If required, vehicles can be parked in municipal parking lots and will not be ticketed or towed.

A reminder, those who are needing a place to warm up during this weekend’s cold weather can visit one of the following locations:

Victoria Hall, 55 King Street West, Cobourg
• Sunday, January 25: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Cobourg Community Centre, 750 D'Arcy Street, Cobourg
• Open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week.
Please note, early morning entrance is through the east side of the building

Winter Warming Room
Northumberland County provides overnight winter warming room services at County Headquarters (555 Courthouse Road, Cobourg), where residents in need can take shelter from the cold and access washrooms and light refreshments. In response to an extreme cold weather forecast, Northumberland County, in collaboration with the Town of Cobourg Bylaw Services, extended the operating hours of the overnight Warming Room located at 555 Courthouse Road, to open continuously from January 23 at 4 p.m. until Monday, January 26, at 8 a.m.
