Important Notice Regarding “Home Fire Safety Checks”

Cobourg, ON (June 20, 2025) – The Cobourg Fire Department urges residents to be cautious when approached by anyone offering unsolicited “home fire safety checks” or attempting to sell fire safety equipment.

The Fire Department has been made aware of unsettling incidents in which residents may have been coerced, pressured, or frightened by individuals posing as fire safety professionals.

In these cases, homeowners were lured through a “free giveaway” into providing their home address and contact information. Shortly afterward, company representatives visited their homes and used scare tactics, including disturbing videos of fire fatalities and false claims about smoke alarms not working—to pressure residents into purchasing expensive fire protection systems costing thousands of dollars.

Here’s what you need to know:

Fire Safety Requirements
Ontario law requires a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Smoke alarms must be replaced at least every 10 years, or sooner if recommended by the manufacturer. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required near sleeping areas in homes with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage.

Know Who to Trust
The Cobourg Fire Department does conduct door-to-door smoke alarm programs from time to time. Our firefighters and staff will always be in official Cobourg Fire Department uniforms, arrive in clearly marked fire department vehicles, and carry Town of Cobourg identification. At no point will they try to sell you products or pressure you into purchasing expensive fire protection systems beyond what is required under the Ontario Fire Code.

If you have questions or need assistance with your smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, contact the Cobourg Fire Department directly at 905-372-9789. Our team is trained and trusted to provide accurate, no-cost fire safety information.

Protect Yourself from Fraud

  • Be wary of anyone using fear or pressure to sell you safety equipment.
  • Do not provide personal or financial information to unknown individuals.
  • If someone at your home makes you feel uncomfortable, call the police, a trusted friend or neighbour for support.
  • Report suspicious behavior to local authorities immediately.

Your safety is our top priority. For trusted, up-to-date fire safety information, always contact the Cobourg Fire Department directly.

Stay safe. Stay informed. Protect yourself—and your home—from fire and fraud.
