Cobourg Fire Department Holiday Safety Reminder

Cobourg, ON (December 4, 2024) – As the holiday season approaches, the Cobourg Fire Department is reminding residents to prioritize fire safety when decorating their homes.

While holiday lights and decorations bring festive cheer, they can also pose potential fire hazards if not used responsibly. The Cobourg Fire Department responded to a call where a small set of Christmas lights caught fire. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported. This incident serves as an important reminder to practice fire safety when decorating for the holidays.

Holiday lights are a beautiful way to celebrate the season. However, improper use or use of damaged decorations can lead to dangerous situations. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

Holiday Lighting Safety

  • Inspect Lights Before Use: Check holiday lights for damage such as frayed wires, broken sockets, or loose connections. Damaged lights can spark and cause fires.
  • Look for ULC/CSA Certification: Use only lights and decorations that are certified by safety standards organizations such as ULC or CSA. These meet strict safety requirements. Before purchasing or using, check for product recalls to ensure the items are safe by visiting Find recalls, advisories and safety alerts - Canada.ca
  • Turn Off Lights: Always turn off holiday lights before going to bed or leaving your home to reduce the risk of electrical fires. Consider using timers for added safety and convenience.

Decoration Safety

  • Avoid Overloading Outlets: Plugging too many decorations into one outlet can overload circuits and cause overheating. Use surge protectors or power bars with built-in circuit breakers.
  • Keep Decorations Away from Heat Sources: Ensure that decorations, especially flammable ones like garlands or paper ornaments, are placed away from fireplaces, radiators, and candles.

Fire Safety Essentials

  • Working Smoke Alarms: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test them monthly to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Create a Home Escape Plan: Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with your family, ensuring that everyone knows two ways out of every room and a designated meeting place outside.

“Holiday decorations are a wonderful way to celebrate the season, but they can lead to tragedy if fire safety is not taken seriously,” says Deputy Chief Ashfield. “By following these simple precautions, you can protect your family and enjoy a safe holiday season.”
