Public Education

The Cobourg Fire Department is committed to engaging with the community and promoting safety education. We provide hall tours for a wide range of groups, including seniors, school classes, community organizations, and youth clubs. These tours provide participants with an up-close look at the skills, tools, and equipment required to be a firefighter, while also sharing essential fire and life safety information. All fire station tours occur at our station at 111 Elgin Street East, and visits can be arranged anywhere in the Town of Cobourg limits.

*Please note that this is an active fire station, so hall tours and requests for firefighters to attend your event are subject to the availability of the fire crew. Our primary duty is to respond to emergencies which may affect scheduled activities.

We attend community events such as the Cobourg Waterfront Festival, Farmers Market, Community Helpers events, and the reading program at the Cobourg Library.

To ensure we can accommodate your request, please submit it at least 2 weeks in advance, preferably using the form below. If your request cannot be filled out by using this form, you can also call us at 905-372-9789 or email fire@cobourg.ca to make a request.

Fire Station Tours

Station tours allow children and community members to step inside our fire station for a tour of the station itself, the fire trucks, equipment and other gear. Children and members of our community will learn vital fire safety tips, and the importance of fire prevention.

There are two kinds of Fire Station Tours we offer:

  • A station and truck tour only (approximately 30 minutes)
  • A station and truck tour AND fire safety presentation (approximately 60 minutes)

Please note the following information about booking fire station tours:

  • Requests must be made at least two weeks in advance.
  • Station tours will take place on Fridays from 10:00am to 4:00pm, with one station tour scheduled per week.
  • Attendance at your station tour depends on staff availability and scheduling. We will do our best but cannot guarantee every request.
  • If your group needs to reschedule or cancel, the Cobourg Fire Department should be notified at least 24 hours in advance. Call us at 905-372-9789 or email us at fire@cobourg.ca
  • Firefighters who conduct these tours are on active duty and may need to leave for an emergency. The Cobourg Fire Department staff will explain what to do if this happens.

Also, take note of the following safety information:

  • Adults must supervise children during tours.
  • Visitors must always stay with the tour leader and follow all safety rules. These will be explained at the start, and feel free to ask questions if you are unsure of anything.

Smoke Alarm Checks

The Cobourg Fire Department is active in the community, going door-to-door to educate residents and provide important fire and life safety information through their annual smoke alarm program. The initiative ensures that every household in Cobourg is equipped with functional smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, as these devices are crucial for early detection of fires and high levels of carbon monoxide. Firefighters educate residents on the importance of having working alarms on every level of their homes, testing them regularly, and developing effective home escape plans. They also offer to check existing alarms, replace batteries, and install new alarms where needed. This annual program underscores the department's commitment to enhancing public safety and preventing fire and carbon monoxide-related tragedies through direct community engagement and education.
