(Issued April 9, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. EST) – Today, the Town of Cobourg has lowered its flags across all municipal buildings, parks and facilities to half-mast to bestow collective sorrow in respect of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away early this morning at the age of 99 years.
Across the Town of Cobourg all flags will be lowered to half-mast including: Building 7, Chris Garrett Park, Cobourg Community Centre, Cobourg Police Service, Fire Hall, Jubilee Park, Rotary Harbourfront Park, Venture13 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre, Victoria Hall* and Victoria Park.
“It is with deep sorrow that we receive the news that His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and beloved husband to Queen Elizabeth II has passed away peacefully earlier this morning,” said Mayor John Henderson for the Town of Cobourg. “He was well known for fulfilling more than 20,000 royal engagements, headed hundreds of charities, founded many children’s programs, and played a prominent part in raising his four children, including his eldest son, Prince Charles, the heir to the throne. In honour of our long established and enduring National relationship between Canada and Great Britain, the Town of Cobourg will be lowering its flags to half-mast to pay our respects to the Queen Elizabeth II and The Royal Family.”
Prince Philip was the longest-serving consort of the British monarch and passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
*Note: The Victoria Hall flag poles are not equipped with halyards and pullies and are unable to fly at half-mast due to the Government of Canada’s general rules for flying and displaying the Canadian flag. The flags will be removed completely today.
