(Issued October 8, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. EST) – The Town of Cobourg and the Cobourg Police Service would like to remind citizens of the Ontario government’s restriction under the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act (ROA) limiting the number of people permitted to attend unmonitored and private social gatherings across the province. This applies to social gatherings for the Thanksgiving holiday this weekend.
In order to help contain the spread of COVID-19 and protect the public, the provincial ROA restricts social gatherings to 10 people at an indoor event or gathering or 25 people at an outdoor event or gathering. Indoor and outdoor events or gatherings cannot be merged together, and gatherings of 35 (25 outdoors and 10 indoors) are not permitted. This order applies to parties, dinners, gatherings, BBQs or wedding receptions held in private residences, backyards, parks and other recreational areas.
Citizens organizing or attending gatherings of more than the permitted limit may be charged under the Reopening Ontario Act, which carries a fine of $10,000 for organizers of these gatherings and $750 for each person in attendance. The Cobourg Police Service will be enforcing provisions of social gathering limits outlined by the Reopening Ontario Act.
The Town of Cobourg recommends that you:
Citizens are strongly encouraged to celebrate Thanksgiving in a safe way, so these holidays do not lead to additional cases of COVID-19.
On behalf of Municipal Council, Town staff and the Cobourg Police Service, we thank you for your continued cooperation and commitment to reducing the spread of COVID-19. Have a safe, happy and virtual Thanksgiving weekend.
