The Public Works Division of the Town of Cobourg is responsible for the following:
The Roads/Sewers Department is responsible for maintaining the 100 kilometres of road, 65 kilometres of sidewalk, 20 bridges and culverts, 110 kilometres of storm and sanitary sewers, 45 kilometres of ditches, 18 traffic signals, and approximately 2000 streetlights.
Snowplowing and snow removal are the main activities of the Roads/Sewers Department during the winter months. Roads are cleared on a priority basis - arterial roads and bus routes receive the highest priority followed by collector roads down to local residential streets. The Town of Cobourg's Roads/Sewers Department maintains all sewers within the municipal right-of-way. It is the property owner's responsibility to maintain sewers on private property unless the municipality has an easement for a public sewer on private property.
Waste management in the Town of Cobourg is the responsibility of the County of Northumberland. Questions about curbside garbage collection, bag tags, recycling, and hazardous waste should be directed to the County of Northumberland at 1-866-293-8379. The Town of Cobourg operates a waste transfer station at the Public Works Yard at 390 King Street West from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday, for its residents. The Parks Department is responsible for the maintenance of 19 parks, the cutting of 300 acres of grass, sports fields, park buildings, the beach, Centennial swimming pool, greenhouses, natural ice rinks and playgrounds.
The Parks Department is also responsible for equipment maintenance (lawn mowers, tractors, trucks, etc.) and snow removal.
