Fire Prevention

A March 1, 2006 amendment to the Ontario Fire Code made it a requirement for homes to have a working smoke alarm on every level. This is in addition to the existing requirement of having smoke alarms outside all sleeping areas. The amendment applies to all single-family, semi-detached and townhomes, whether owner-occupied or rented.

Article 2.6.3.4. of the Ontario Fire Code states: "Open air burning shall not be permitted unless approved, or unless such burning consists of a small confined fire, supervised at all times and used to cook food on a grill or a barbecue." Cobourg residents who wish to dispose of extremely large quantities of brush via burning will require a permit to do so. Within the Town of Cobourg, permit fees are currently:

Residential: $35.00 + H.S.T.
Contractors: $200.00 + H.S.T.

For further details on the permit process or to initiate the process, please contact our Fire Prevention Officer, Aaron Blair (ablair@cobourg.ca)

Should you have a large quantity of brush to dispose of, we highly recommend the environmentally friendly alternative - scheduling your brush disposal to coincide with the Town's free brush chipping program. Please contact the Engineering Department at 905-372-4555 for further information and dates.

The Cobourg Fire Department conducts routine inspections for all occupancies within the Town. These occupancies include assembly, commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-unit residential, as well as single family residential, on request. The fee for requested inspections (for the purpose of running a home business) is $70.00 plus H.S.T.

The department is proud to participate in various public education & public relations activities throughout the year. Some of these events include school visits during Fire Prevention Week, hall tours for Brownies and Scouts (as part of their badge requirements) and public speaking engagements at seniors' residences, emergency management seminars, etc.

The Cobourg Fire Safety Team assists department members with the delivery of public fire safety education to the community. Some of the team's members are individuals who are genuinely interested in pursuing a career in fire fighting.

Watch for the team at events such as the Waterfront Festival, the Children's Wish Foundation Picnic, Fire Prevention Week events and other community and school events.
